Personal Statement for Accounting and Finance – University of British Columbia

The way I think of accounting is that it is a fundamental part of our lives. I believe that every person uses the principle of accounting at least once in their lives. It can be things they do in their daily lives, for example, checking how much money they have with them; how much money they have spent or they use it in businesses or large scale transactions as it is commonly known.   I have always been a keen observer when it comes to accounting. I had a passion for mathematics and problem solving, which led me towards Accounting and Finance as these subjects interlink massively.

I graduated from the University of Ilorin in 2013 and I achieved a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Accounting and Finance with a second class upper (2.1) degree. As a result of my dedication during my undergraduate studies, I became proficient in accounting principles and policies, sage and spreadsheet, analysing statements to enable companies make decisions, advanced time management, critical thinking and juggling multiple tasks efficiently. With these skills, I believe that I have the right foundation to build on for this program.

Upon completing my bachelor’s studies, I chose to pursue a Masters in accounting and Finance at the University of Northampton. When I started my Masters program at Northampton University, I had difficulties getting used to the environment as I was far away from my home country and family for the first time in my life. However, mingling with various people who came from different cultures and backgrounds has helped shape my life and today, I believe that I am a different person than I was when I first set foot into this blessed country, England. After I had completed my master’s degree, I got a work-placement in a prestigious company as an Accounts executive. I coordinated all staff and branch activities and managed all sales and marketing strategies. I stayed on the job for 1 year and then went ahead to complete an internship on technology in a different company, which established my interest in data and financial technology and instilled in me the spirit of teamwork, which I got from collaborating with other participants.

My experience of working with various financial institutions has allowed me to observe how organisations analyse financial, economic and geopolitical information that impact markets. This has motivated me to explore further and uncover my full potential. Furthermore, this working experience has taught me to be highly observant and meticulous and has sharpened my research and analytical skills which I believe will give a positive impact in completing this doctorate degree in Accounting and Finance at The University of British Columbia. With the well known reputation for its lecturers, world class facilities and the highly civilised Canada where it is located, I believe that the University of British Columbia is no doubt the best place for me to complete this course. I am particularly interested in the different workshops held by the school every week on finance, economics, policy analysis and management science. These fields will no doubt help to sharpen my skills and deepen my knowledge in Accounting and Finance.

If I am given the opportunity to complete this course, my future plan is to pursue my interest in chartered accountancy, establish a financial institution and assume responsibility for the analysis and implementation of all tasks and actively contribute to the overall success of any organisation.

I look forward to the opportunity to begin learning and contributing to your program.
