Personal Statement for Dentistry

Oral health affects our lives in ways that are often taken for granted. Our mouths can reflect the overall state of our bodies. It is a commonly overlooked aspect of health management, but it is a very crucial part of our well-being. The complications from a lack of dental care can extend to gingivitis and there is a proven link between oral disease and heart disease. Additionally, almost all systemic diseases have an oral component, which includes oral cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease. These diseases endanger human lives, particularly in my home country, where most people do not feel the necessity to visit a dentist for routine inspections of their mouth organs, resulting in poor patronage of dental services thereby causing most people to shy away from studying dentistry in Nigeria. So, aside from wanting to pursue this educational path to improve my competence as a professional, I see my journey into dentistry as a greater call to service because Nigerians require adequate dental education.

From my experience, most people from my country feel that visiting a dentist is either a waste of money or too expensive. So, when they finally develop dental diseases or have the need to visit a dentist, they end up in the hands of quacks to lower the cost. I witnessed such a case during my internship at a dental clinic. A patient who was involved in a car crash was brought in for treatment, when we saw the state of her teeth, we knew it was tampered with. We started questioning her. She narrated her ordeal. She went to a quack that tried to carry out an intermaxillary fixation for a lower cost but ended up rupturing her gum, causing more harm. This incident reminded me that there is a need to educate Nigerians on the dangers of gambling with teeth and gum diseases, which could claim lives. This increased my interest in dentistry and influenced my decision to further my knowledge of dentistry to effect a positive change in my home country.

During my undergraduate years at the University of Ibadan, I received awards for my scholastic performance and I was an active member of the debate team, which positively contributed to my communication skills. Upon graduating, I was granted a bachelor’s in Dentistry with a second-class upper (2.1) degree and also gained a basic understanding of various dental procedures and why each component is necessary. In preparation for my specialization, I volunteered to work at a dental clinic and was given the responsibilities of welcoming patients and assisting the doctor throughout the dental surgery, which increased my Organisation and communication skills and further sharpened my skills in dental procedures such as teeth filling, cleaning and whitening including prosthodontics such as root canal surgery, dental implant replacement, and bone grafting. These experiences further steered me to my intended postgraduate program at the University of Alberta. I secured employment at a dental clinic as the head of the dental department and was responsible for obtaining a detailed history of dental complaints, treatment of dental cases, and counseling patients on preventive oral care. My experience taught me how to interact with individuals from different backgrounds and understand their needs. I also came to understand the importance of teamwork.

My decision to further my studies in dentistry was fuelled by my desire to start a dental practice to sensitize people in my home country to the importance of dental health and make dental care accessible and affordable to all. My focus is to gain skills in some dental treatment procedures including, amalgam and composite restorations, placement of dental implants as well as techniques for bridge and crown construction. 

Canada is a country that provides all its international students with the opportunity to work and study, which will help me earn some money to support myself throughout my stay there. From my research, I discovered that the University of Alberta allows students to observe and treat patients as they progress in their studies, which will help me gain the expertise and the necessary practical skills that I require in dentistry. With my work experience over the years, added to my excellent academic performance and set of skills, I can now approach dentistry as a mature student, so I believe that I am well-equipped for a master’s in dentistry at the University of Alberta. Therefore, if given the chance to complete this degree and receive my accreditation to practise, I intend to provide my services to the locals in my home country through my clinic.
