Sample University of Toronto Statement of Purpose for PhD Studies

Very early as a child during one of our usual Sunday school classes in church, our teacher taught us about the negative effect of money, citing stories from the Bible where people betrayed each other because of their greed and love for money. She ended her class with the popular saying among Christians,“money is the root of all evil”. After that class, I returned home and enquired further about our lesson from my dad whom I had a close relationship. He was the one who took it upon himself to explain to me how money works and the principles and rules that governed the use of money in any society. This discussion gave me a whole new perspective on money, finance, and economies. My dad became my first financial instructor as he was the one that ignited the passion in me to gain deep insight into business, and trade. In my junior secondary school, I took a keen interest in business studies; I found topics like factors of production, trade, office procedures, and balance sheet enjoyable. Combined with my love for mathematics, I also developed a strong interest in economics by the time I got to Senior secondary, understanding the economic concepts taught in the class came easily that I began taking some of my classmates on lessons tutorials.

I later went on to study Economics at my undergraduate level, with the hope of further deepening my understanding of economic decision-making processes amongst humans and how their subjective realities affect the quality of decisions they make. After my undergraduate studies, I found application for my knowledge at (…) where I was able to render effective financial and business solutions to net worth individuals and institutional investors. I proceeded to get a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Economics and Finance at the University of Leeds. Towards the end of my master’s study, I conducted research focused on determining the effect of some key macroeconomic parameters – notably FDI, devaluation and trade – on output growth in South America.

Although my MSc knowledge in economics and finance have been able to guide my career progress thus far from a credit risk analyst to a Transfer Pricing Associate at (…), I have come to realize the need for advanced knowledge in other to match my latest promotion as a (…). The position of Transfer Pricing Senior Associate requires me to demonstrate higher proficiency in business development, financial management, industry research, data analytics, financial market survey and analysis, business advisory, commercial judgment, engagement economics and such like. I hope to strengthen my understanding and skills with this doctorate in Finance from Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.

My decision to study at University of Toronto is inspired by the outstanding faculty and staff strength for this course. The faculty advisors will contribute immensely to my future career prospects because as I gathered from my research, most of them have a combination of academic and work experience to back up whatever they would be teaching in class. That said, I am most impressed with the teaching approach because it applies a qualitative teaching approach to provide a strong base in finance and economics suitable to solve issues that can be encountered in current-day management.

For this doctoral study, my research interest will be centred on financial economics, with a focus on (…). I hope to be able to partake in research that will proffer solutions to struggling economies like (…) and how to properly manage their financial health to avoid the dire impact on their financial markets. I have checked the profile of Professor Donald J.S. Brean, Professor Heski Bar-Isaac and Professor Alexander Dyck, and I am particularly interested in their guidance since they have covered similar research work in this area.

Given my educational background in Economics and Finance, I have developed foundational knowledge in finance and research that will match the student expectations for this PhD program. My experience on the professional front provides me with in-depth knowledge and the requisite experience needed to explore lectures and assessments from different perspectives. I believe my passion and drive for an improved financial economy and overall state of affairs for my country makes me a good fit for the program.

In conclusion; part of the reasons for taking my current challenging job is because of the invaluable opportunity to further my studies and improve my experience. Learning gives me much satisfaction and the more I learn, the more confident I become. It is my quest for knowledge that has helped me achieve career success at this place, and I do not just learn for myself, I learn to apply my knowledge both in a practical sense and also to impact others. I have prepared myself financially, mentally, emotionally, and physically to meet the demands for this advanced academic pursuit, and I am confident that I can replicate my past successes in this program.

Thank you for your time, I look forward to your consideration.
