SOP for Construction Management Sample
I was born and raised in (…..); a country capable of building an economy equal to other top economies in the world. However, it is sad to acknowledge that despite the human, material, and natural resources, it is troubled by inadequacies in talent, infrastructure and social justice which have hindered the growth of its industries. For the construction industry, a good percentage of projects that would have helped extend development to rural areas are most times either abandoned or stalled due to poor resource management, which has resulted in overpopulation in major cities, unemployment, and rural stagnation.
Fortunately, recent happening in the (…..) sector has indicated impressive growth including; improved construction expenditure by government and private entities, and increased numbers of real-estate companies. This has made engineers start taking proactive steps to harness this golden opportunity.
My career in the engineering sector began on completion of my Civil Engineering studies; I was retained by my alma-mater to join the Physical Planning Division as an Engineer and a Site Manager. In the last 6 years, my responsibility at work has involved management and coordination of construction projects which has introduced me to various tradesmen and stakeholders who work on construction sites, such as Electricians, Carpenters, Plasterers, Plumbers, and Bricklayers. My experience in this sector has also exposed me to contract administration particularly in projects with conflicts which have further fuelled my desire to study correct construction practices given the lack of strong domestic players to effectively manage and resolve disputes that occur during the execution of construction projects. I am inspired to earn a master’s degree in construction management that will provide me with the opportunities to broaden my skills in defining, planning, scheduling, coordinating, controlling, communicating every aspect of a construction work ensuring the project objectives are accomplished.
My decision to study in the UK is tied to my love for British engineering companies; notable on my list is Atkins, the engineering and Design Company that handled the design and construction of the Burj Al Arab (The acclaimed first 7 star hotel in the world). Their successes in managing world-class projects has kept me dreaming of studying in the UK- a place that has produced of the best construction companies that I look forward to working in. Hence, when I decided to enroll for my master’s degree in construction management, the first place that came to my mind was the U.K. Amongst the schools in the U.K, Birmingham City University came highly recommended by my colleagues because of the practical and engaging learning opportunities in BCU. Moreover, learning from BCU lecturers who have multidisciplinary consultancy knowledge in this field in a learning environment that accommodates people from a different culture is a good idea for building capacity and career proficiency.
My short-term goal is to join a leading construction company where I would have the leverage to apply the knowledge acquired while growing through the ranks. While in the long run, I wish to apply the knowledge gathered through my years of experience in running an engineering consulting firm.
Throughout my career, my goals have evolved and matured due to increased knowledge through field experience and acquired skills. And, though I have gained knowledge and had the opportunity to apply it in a practical sense, I also understand the invaluable asset of further education. Furthering my education is of utmost importance if I am to fulfil my career goals. I, am expectant that my skills, background, and future ambitions will present a good case for me and enable me gain a positive consideration from the admission committee.
