HCS has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1879. From its humble beginnings as a small rural school district, it has developed into one of the biggest and most esteemed school systems in the state. Over the years, Horry County Schools has adapted to the evolving needs of its students and community, embracing innovation and providing a broad range of academic programs and extracurricular activities.

The school district is serving over 300,000 people along the Atlantic Coastline of northeastern South Carolina; with a twelve-member Board of Education, elected from single-member districts.

Horry County has 56 schools within nine attendance zones: Aynor, Carolina Forest, Conway, Green Sea Floyds, North Myrtle Beach, Socastee, Loris, Myrtle Beach, and St. James. The superintendent/chair/CEO is Rick Maxey; a role usually elected by the Board.  

Horry County Career and Academies

Each zone consists of a high school and associated elementary and middle schools. HCS ranks third among the state’s 85 school districts and it features 27 schools. These include:

  • Pre-kindergarten to fifth grades
  • 13 middle schools

  • 3 career and technical academies
  • 1 Scholars Academy
  • Four charter schools

Two high schools; Aynor High School and Socastee High School offer International Baccalaureate programs. The district’s career and technical academies include the Academy for Arts, Sciences, and Technology; the Palmetto Academy for Learning Motor Sports; and the Academy for Technology and Academics. The Palmetto Academy for Learning Motor Sports, functions as a charter school, and caters to middle and high school students, the other two academies primarily serve high school students.

The Scholars Academy is for students in grades 9-12 with excellent academic performance. The Early College High School is designed for students in grades 9-12 who are underrepresented in post-secondary education. This program allows the students to earn two years of college credit while studying for a diploma. The Playcard Environmental Education Center provides in situ natural science instruction to give students hands-on knowledge of the interrelationships of living things. The Adult Education Center offers various educational benefits for adults, including GED classes, career and college transition programs, community classes, and English as a Second Language classes. 

Additional Information

The community classes also cover topics such as computer literacy, arts and crafts, Spanish, CPR/AED certification, and Tai Chi for arthritis/health. Free childcare and early education for the children of parents attending classes are offered by the Adult Education Center. Hence, students in seventh grade and above have the choice to take classes through either the HCS Virtual School Program or the South Carolina Virtual School Program.

One remarkable feature of HCS is the introduction of the institute’s Mobile app in 2018, which is available for Android, iOS, and web/HTML5-based. This app is designed to receive valuable tips, information, and essential updates throughout the year about registration, school supplies, access to employment opportunities, school planning and daily calendar, open houses, and more.

Enrolment Requirements

The registration procedures into the Horry County school district start with online registration for all grade-level students. During registration, there are certain documents required to be eligible. However, getting them ready before beginning the registration process is important. Salary Scales

For Teachers:  The grades for teachers are:

  • Grade 28 – Bachelor’s Degree
  • Grade 29 – Bachelor’s Degree + 18 hours
  • Grade 31 – Masters Degree
  • Grade 32 – Masters Degree +30 hours
  • Grade 35 – Doctorate

For Support Staff: All support staff are placed in grades 101 – 110.

For Non-Teaching Professionals: All non-teaching professionals will be placed in grades 112 -312. The board has approved a $300 per month supplement for any non-teaching professional who has obtained a doctoral degree.

Existing employees will receive a written notification during their first check of the contract year which carries their placement on the salary scale. Also, information regarding an individual’s placement on the scale will not be handled over the phone. In situations where there is an error in placement, attached to the letter is an email address to contact.
