This article provides more information on ” how to approach a company not recruiting”. We covered Part 1 of this topic in an earlier blog post and if you have not read it, you can read it here “How to Approach a Company Not Recruiting Part 1“.

You can hunt for a job in companies even when they don’t have an ongoing recruitment. A company could have a vacant position but have not come to terms with how to fill that position. When you show up with your request to join them, it’s like you are presenting an answer to their math question before they start solving it.

Here are steps you should take when you want to approach a company not yet recruiting.

STEP 1:

Make a list of companies you would like to apply to. If you don’t know them, you can check your city’s directory website to discover some in your industry.

STEP 2:

Find their email address (you can do that by visiting their websites or using the directory website).

STEP 3:

Send them an email stating your request to join them.

STEP 4:

Do this for as many companies in your industry as you can.

STEP 5:

Be hopeful and ready to attend any call from them.
Do not attach your CV if you’re doing this online. Only send emails. A sample of how you should send an email is in Part 1 of this article.

But, if you want to visit the companies physically, you should print your CV and other important documents in case you are asked to submit them.

In other not to have a hard time finding the email address of the companies you want to write to.

This is how you can search for a company’s email address in your city.

Step 1: use the Google search bar, and type;
Directory website + [name of city]
E.g. Directory website + Port Harcourt

Step 2: Select your industry. E.g. Accommodation, Business…
Most directory websites are arranged according to industry, or they provide functions that help you search by industry.

Step 3: Explore the companies to get their email or web address (which you will use to look up their email).

Step 4: Copy the email and send a mail to them indicating your interest in joining them. The best way, however, is to check if they have an HR email. Sending the mail to their HR mail is the best.

Sample of How to Address in an Email

See a sample of how you can address a mail below.

{If no job openings and you have a particular department you want to work in}

Dear Human Resource Manager, (or name, if you know the HR’s name)

I am a graduate of (put your discipline), and I have completed my National Youth Service. I’m currently available to accept employment opportunities and I feel that my skills are off good match for your (put the name of the department you want to work in).
I would be grateful if you grant me an opportunity to forward my Resume for your consideration.

Regards,
(Your name).

The last line of your mail is a bait. It is the reason why you won’t attach your CV if you are seeking an opportunity in a company that’s not currently hiring.
