There are a variety of positions across the Northwest Territories for Nurse Practitioners, including in the areas of community, primary care, and mental health.

The focus of the Nurse Practitioner’s across all positions is to improve a client’s health and ensure that the client’s care needs are met in the context of the client’s mental, emotional and physical well-being. Emphasis is placed on community development and health promotion, as well as advanced knowledge and skills in assessment, nursing and medical diagnosis, intervention, treatment management, drug therapy and referral functions which are shared with physicians, pharmacists and other service providers.

Northwest Territories’ NPs are provided with one of the highest salaries in Canada, including an incredible compensation and recruitment package. The annual salary range for a full-time NPs in the NWT ranges from $130,260 to $155,590, with potential additional gross earnings (before overtime) of between approximately $23,700 and $34,100 within the first year of employment, based on northern living allowance, recruitment bonus, 1-year retention bonus, and other paid benefits.

Additional benefits include relocation assistance, professional fees reimbursements, northern tax benefits (up to $11/day in deductions after 6-months of residency), outstanding leave benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, health and dental plans, maternity and parental leave, professional development opportunities, education support, and an optional deferred salary leave plan. NPs are also typically eligible for student loan forgiveness through Canada’s Loan Forgiveness Program.

These positions typically require the completion of a nursing degree, completion of a master’s program in nursing, and certification as a Nurse Practitioner or an MSc-Nurse Practitioner, and at least two years of relevant experience.
