While growing up, I have always admired the courage and poise exhibited by journalists to uncover truths that are otherwise hidden from the public. I was usually fascinated by how my parents usually sang praises of their favourite journalists whenever they unravelled jaw-dropping stories. It is against this backdrop that I fell in love with journalism and continued to seek a career in the field.

During my secondary school education, I became a co-editor, news writer and reporter for The Herald, a news publication platform in my secondary school. However, with a strong belief that the best journalists in Nigeria usually have an impressive background in  English, I enrolled for a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in English and Literary studies at Delta State University in Nigeria. My undergraduate studies have no doubt honed my knowledge of the English language, communication, writing, creativity skills and critical thinking ability.

Although I am currently a self-employed graduate teaching English and Literature lessons, I have continued to remain desirous for a degree in Journalism, hence my desire for a master’s degree in Journalism at Robert Gordon University in the United Kingdom.

I have, however, chosen to study in Aberdeen and Scotland because the region boasts some of the top research-minded institutions in the world. As an extrovert who loves beautiful sceneries, I also consider many of Aberdeen’s wildlife communities perfect relaxation spots. Most importantly, Aberdeen is regarded as one of the very few affordable cities in the United Kingdom, making it the ideal place for many Africans like myself.

Having pointed out the attractions offered by Aberdeen and Scotland, it is important to state that, in the course of my research on the quality of teaching, many universities in the United Kingdom came to mind. However, owing to the location of Robert Gordon University and its recognition as one of only the top 20% of Universities in the United Kingdom recognised in the Teaching Excellence Framework as a Gold Standard institution, I thought it expedient to opt for RGU as my first pick. Moreover, I am convinced that RGU provides the best fit for me since its curriculum is designed to grant graduates the necessary skill set to guarantee employability. Additionally, I find the Master of Journalism program at RGU appealing because it covers a wide range of aspects, such as news investigation, reporting, and every facet of contemporary multimedia platforms, among others.

Nonetheless, it is crucial to add that a number of course modules covered by this program, like News Writing, Media and Society and Media Law, are aspects I find relevant to my long-term goal of becoming a Public Relations Officer. While News Writing and Media and Society will help me develop unique and newsworthy pitches for public consumption and a good understanding of the societal and cultural values of media, learning Media Law will certainly aid my awareness of the ethics and ethos of media practices as a Public Relations Officer.

In any case, I am convinced that a Master’s degree in Journalism at Robert Gordon University will grant me the opportunity for a good shot at fulfilling my dreams and also grant me the transferable skills to adapt to changing trends. Owing to the status of Robert Gordon University, I believe this degree will also allow me to stand a greater chance of working in any government ministry in Nigeria or as a public-relations personnel for some of the top-tier companies I already have in mind (in Nigeria) who will be needing my service.
