Sample 1: PTDF Scholarship Personal Statement Sample

My burning desire to improve the oil and gas industry of Nigeria and equip others with the necessary knowledge and skillsets to become graduates, professionals, and experts in the petroleum industry, particularly in terms of educational development has fueled my interest to apply for the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarship to obtain a masters (MSc) degree in petroleum engineering. Obtaining this degree will boost my career and set me on track to achieving my career goals, and in return, it will allow PTDF to achieve its desired goal in raising competent and skilled experts in the petroleum industry through human and institutional development.

During my graduate studies, I developed a robust capacity to learn through discipline, dedication, and diligence in my academic work. This is evident in my grades as I obtained high grades for several modules and bagged a First Class in Petroleum Engineering from the Federal University of Technology Owerri with a cumulative grade point (CGPA) of 4.66/5.00. My quest for more theoretical and practical oriented knowledge has propelled my interest to go for a master’s degree research. I am particularly keen to study at Heriot-Watt University, Imperial College London or the University of Aberdeen because they meet my criteria. Firstly, the universities have well-sophisticated research structures and modern facilities with professional instructors who are experienced in the field of petroleum engineering. Secondly, they encourage extracurricular activities like student service and mentorship programs which are all beneficial to student development. Lastly, their ranking in research is also an attraction point for me.

Work placement during my national service helped me to impart knowledge to younger students which brought a lot of joy and fulfilment to me. While my recent work with Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited entails working with different technological tools to explore advanced oil and gas production, this has, in turn, heightened my interest in the oil and gas industry, and I wish to expand on my knowledge through a master study.

My proposed course of study is ……….. and my research interest is in the area of …………… The research interest is relevant to the oil and gas industry because it will uncover …………….  This will further aid the oil and gas industry to find hydrocarbon, explore and produce fluid maximally for economic growth.

From PTDF objectives, this scholarship would be of great assistance in supporting my career goals. I aim to impact the oil and gas industry of Nigeria once I return from my postgraduate studies or possibly proceed to a Ph. D and eventually take up a career in research and teaching for Human Capacity Development.

Sample 2: PTDF Scholarship Personal Statement Sample Accepted

The oil and gas industry is a key part of the global energy system, and as such is a driver for economic and national development. The industry supplies more than 50% of global fuel consumption, and hydrocarbons are still expected to remain the superior source of energy. As a graduate of Petroleum Engineering, my understanding of the challenges in the industry including, the inability to harness all the hydrocarbons in a reserve, environmental challenges through flares, spillages, and poor waste management has prompted me to contribute to the oil and gas industry of Nigeria in this enlisted areas, while also training the younger generation on key industry skills in the position of a lecturer.

I am applying for this scholarship because going through the mission of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarship, the mission of the scheme very much aligns with my career goals. Obtaining this master degree will boost my career and set me on track to achieving my career goals, and in return, it will also allow the scheme to achieve one of its goals of raising competent and skilled experts in the petroleum industry through human and institutional development.

My quest for more theoretical and practical oriented knowledge fuelled my interest to go for a master’s degree in Reservoir Engineering. I am particularly keen to study at TU Clausthal, Germany because they meet my academic expectations through their modules and assessment methods. Firstly, the university has well-sophisticated research structures and modern facilities with professional instructors who are experienced in the field of petroleum engineering. Secondly, the school encourages extracurricular activities like student service and mentorship programmes which are also beneficial for student development. Lastly, their ranking in research is also an attraction point for me.

My work placement as a Graduate Assistant at the Federal University of Technology Owerri has prepared me for this research-based masters degree. Most recently, I researched the “Development of Environmentally Friendly Oil Based Drilling Fluid Using Almond Oil, Castor Oil and Groundnut Oil”. These oils are a technical replacement for the conventional diesel oil-based mud which will help mitigate environmental challenges. Also, during my undergraduate study, I carried out project research on “Improving Oil Recovery in Rim Reservoir by Simultaneous Gas and Water Injection Using Smart Wells”.

My proposed course of study is Reservoir Engineering, and my research interest is in ……………….. This research is important to the oil and gas industry because the knowledge gained through my research work could be applied to solve some of the challenges plaguing the industry including discovering more unconventional hydrocarbons, exploring and producing fluid maximally for economic growth.

In terms of national development, Petroleum engineering is expected to create employment for local labour, transform the oil and gas industry for the increased benefit of Nigeria through effective implementation of policies on hydrocarbon exploration, exploitation, and production in accordance with international standards. It is also expected to boost gas supply to the power sector and also increase revenue through the exportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

From PTDF objectives, this scholarship would be of great assistance in supporting my career goals. I aim to impact the oil and gas industry of Nigeria once I return from my postgraduate studies or possibly proceed to a Ph. D and eventually continue my career in research and teaching for Human Capacity Development.
