Personal Statement for PhD Social Science Royal Roads University

It is fascinating how humans can be identical yet different in many ways, both in character and beliefs. To understand our complexities in behavior and how our different dispositions and immediate societies affect us is one thing, but to live with the reality of constantly evolving behaviors is another thing. Since enrolling for my first degree in one of the social sciences, I have developed a keen interest in understanding the beliefs, ideologies, and social constructs that continue informing our decisions and actions as humans. For instance, we are seeing a shift in what is seen as acceptable conduct within our society in conversations concerning government, politics, economy, work, religion, marriage, and tradition just to mention a few. And the odds suggest that just like we are doing now, we will continue to question the things that we have accepted as the norm as long as we exist.

I have always had an interest in interdisciplinary subjects, and the versatility of their application has continued to be a driving force in my career. While the application for social sciences is vast, this time, I am interested in this study to satisfy my intellectual curiosity to provide a meaningful solution to the concealable stigmatized identities concerning organizational behavioral policies within the workforce in Nigeria and Sub-Sahara Africa. I have developed an interest in this study through my corporate experience providing human resource solutions in my capacity as an Employee Relations Supervisor. A doctoral study in Social Science will allow me to analyze the issue, the choices we have been making, and how those choices have continually impacted our outcome, hence, discovering effective ways to improve the situation and bridge the gap that exists.

In September 2000, I completed my undergraduate studies in Education Political Science at Xxx. My undergraduate degree exposed me to the fact that university life is undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences in one’s life. It represents a critical developmental period for both late adolescents and young adults in society. Therefore, the choices we make within the university environment can and will redefine our existence in society and the world at large. More so, in my final year of undergraduate study, I worked on project research with the topic – The Effect of Social Behaviour on Students Academic Performance Case Study – University Students. Through this research, I was able to uncover that the environment comprises factors that play a role in academic performance. The environment may be physical or socio-physical. All factors have a direct or indirect relationship with students’ performance, however, how one strikes a balance between stressful academic attainment and social activities makes the difference.

On the career front, I have gained robust experience working in different career positions including the Contract department as a Foreign Procurement Assistant, Finance department as a Cost Controller, and recently Human Resources department as Employee Relations and Benefits Supervisor at xxx. My responsibilities involve dealing with individuals from different ideologies, and backgrounds. With the responsibilities of working as an Employee Relations Supervisor, I became increasingly curious to broaden my knowledge to understand some observed individual behaviors of professionals. More so, I began to challenge myself to make more contributions to my organization and execute my duties more effectively. Hence, I enrolled for a higher degree in Human Resources. Studying for my Master’s in Human Resources at xxx gave me an unrivaled opportunity to improve my understanding of leadership, management, and team cohesion, which has helped me effectively execute my duties and relate better with colleagues no matter their identities. Similarly, recent experiences have made me question some policies within our workplace and have necessitated my desire to study a course like social science, as it will give me an overview of our social relationships that will transcend the corporate space.

My decision to go with the program at Royal Roads University is tied to the excellent teaching, competence of the faculty, affordability, and student support for this program. Going through the faculty profile, I am fully satisfied with the experience level of the lecturers for this program. In addition, the modules correctly align with my expectations, and I look forward to exploring the modules as they combine theoretical learning and research experience. I am looking forward to the modules on Social Change and Interdisciplinarity in Global Context, and Social Science Theory and the Globalized World.

In conclusion, having also enrolled for my master’s degree abroad, I understand the demands to excel in an advanced program as a foreign student, and I have prepared myself to excel in this pursuit. I look forward to your consideration.
