How to Write a Personal Statement for University Application
When writing your personal statement, you have to understand and follow this guide;
Getting Started:
- Writing a good personal statement takes time, so be patient during this process. Don’t be shy to write and rewrite until you get your best statement. Remember that the quality of your statement will determine if you’ll be accepted or rejected for your desired course.
- Start on time; don’t wait until it’s a few days before the deadline.
- Do a thorough research about the university and the course that you’re applying to. Learn all you can about the trends in that discipline and it’ll help you harness your ideas.
- Take time to see what others who have applied for similar programs have written and you’ll be better prepared to start yours.
- Note: Reading samples online is good to get ideas of how to effectively structure your statement, however, it should not be a means to copy people’s work and pass it as yours. You may be flagged for plagiarism.
Writing:
- When you’re set to write, the best thing to do is structure your statement into an outline (see outline below). Have an idea of what you would want to cover at the end of the day with your statement.
- You can start by addressing those areas you want to cover differently without really connecting them. The idea is to have general points for the different sections of your statement and you can focus on connecting them later.
- Write expressively and don’t bother about correctness and grammar during this stage. Your idea is to first transfer your thoughts into writing and you can think of arranging them later.
- After you’ve gotten your draft, take a break.
- Return to the draft at a later time and take an overview of the draft you’ve come up with; the reason is to see the areas that your statement is lacking in and then address them so it can flow.
- After addressing all the areas of your outline and ensuring that they make good meaning, work towards connecting the paragraphs to form a single document that is well-structured. In other words, this is the point where you connect your paragraphs and ensure the stories/claims add up.
How You Can Format Your Personal Statement
A general rule of thumb you might follow is to submit a 2-3 page statement, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins, in 12-pt—Times New Roman font. While there are no set rules about length or format, this is typically considered appropriate and sufficient.
Personal Statement for MSc Occupational Therapy
The purpose of life is usually fulfilled in service to others and anytime I am opportune to render service to others, particularly the vulnerable, I find joy and fulfillment.
As a young girl, I remember my first time assisting my mother in caring for my bedridden grandmother. I still recall how I enjoyed every minute that I put into caring for her and the excitement in my house when she returned to full health and could do some minor things on her own. After her recovery, my parents praised me for my contributions towards ensuring my grandmother’s recovery. You can imagine the effect such appreciation from my parents had on me. That experience gave me a sense of responsibility since I had finally discovered something that my parents were proud of, it was now normal for me to seek more avenues to support people, even when they were not my relatives. It didn’t take too long before I developed into that sibling and classmate who was always looking out for others, I was always the first to know when someone was sick in my house, and I would ensure that they got the right medical treatment and followed their prescriptions so that they could recover on time.
Years after, as I grew in knowledge, my interest in people transcended from just something I did to get adulation from my parents, I began to understand that caring for people is my nature. Being there for people, listening to them when they need help, advising and suggesting solutions to their problems came naturally to me no matter the environment I found myself in. And though I’ve spent the last couple of years working in a non-related field, the fact remains that; nothing gave me more fulfillment than the times I had to genuinely support my colleagues, not even the promotions I got.
Occupational Therapy caught my attention when I was searching for disciplines that would enable me to work with vulnerable people of different age groups while helping them improve their lives. I discovered that Occupational Therapists help their patients to adapt and overcome limitations, be it behavioral, locomotive, or coordination problems, and I immediately fell in love with the discipline as it was the kind of position I have always wanted to find myself in.
Fortunately, among the abundance of options, Xxx University satisfies my needs for studying this course with the ideal course modules and teaching methods. I have experienced learning in a teacher-centric environment from my first degree, and I know that is not the best for me, so, I was glad when I saw that this program will follow a student-centered and participative learning method. Coupled with the opportunities that come with an Xxx University degree, these will enable me to gain a sense of responsibility and belonging in Occupational Therapy while studying, and access to bigger opportunities upon graduation.
