Personal Statement for Caregiving at Queen Mary University

When faced with a serious diagnosis, patients are sometimes completely overwhelmed by their emotional and physical needs and tend to downplay their pain when talking to a doctor. Caregivers are therefore tasked with the important roles of providing support and ensuring an honest conversation between doctors and patients to convey the patient’s preferences for treatment options. They are also in charge of the patient’s care. I was naturally drawn to caregiving because of my exposure to the health complications faced by my father, who developed prostate cancer when I was at the University. I automatically became his caregiver, because most of the nurses acted like my father had leprosy when it was time to change his catheter. I started to change the catheter myself and also found ways to entertain and encourage my father to ease his physical and emotional pain. So, the low quality of health care that my father received is something that saddens me each time I think of it, as everyone deserves the right to the highest quality of physical and mental health care. Therefore, it is my goal to make a significant contribution to the healthcare of the people in my community through the effective delivery of caregiving services. Unexpectedly, my father passed away as a result of complications from a heart attack during my final year, revealing the importance of caregiving. Despite the emotional trauma, I continued my studies with a strong drive to pursue a career in quality caregiving. As I reminisce on my journey to Care Giving, I can only describe it with one word; determination, because I was faced with situations that required a high level of hard work, focus and maturity to pull through. To this day, my Father’s death serves as my painful reminder of the human factor involved in healthcare.

Following my graduation from the Ekiti State University with a bachelor’s degree in Geography Education, I volunteered to work at a hospital as a healthcare assistant. I was assigned the duty of arranging bedding and helping patients with their general daily routines. This experience improved my knowledge of clinical duties such as checking temperature and blood pressure and also sharpened my ability to address the needs of patients and pay attention to detail. Currently, I work as a caregiver at a clinic, where I administer medications and treatments as directed by the registered nurse who I work with and respond to patients’ requests. This has given me valuable experience in effective communication, observation and time management. During this time, I understood the importance of patience and empathy when interacting with patients. My interest in caregiving stemmed from the appalling healthcare delivery system in my community and my desire to restructure the healthcare system and provide the best quality of care for all citizens.

I chose the United Kingdom because of the diverse cultures that inhibit the beautiful country. This will push me to step outside my comfort zone and experience different cultures and perhaps learn a new language. During my research, Queen Mary University caught my attention when I discovered that the school offers simulation training sessions with clinical exposure to patients in the intensive care unit with ward-round teaching styles. This teaching style will give me the skills to advance my career in caregiving. I intend to gain knowledge in supportive care for failing organ function, care of the unconscious patient, Neurocritical care and Trauma management. My experiences from various work placements with people in the care sector and my skills make me fit for a master’s in caregiving at Queen Mary University.

If allowed to complete this program, I intend to improve the efficiency in healthcare facilities and the quality of care provided in my community. I will also use the knowledge as a springboard to develop and expand research programs on caregiving. I look forward to learning and contributing culturally to your program.
