Personal Statement for Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Every day, I walk past buildings and ask myself “what if people erected buildings without planning?”.Well, the answer to that question is that there would probably be buildings collapsing more than they do today. Architecture has contributed some of the greatest building and infrastructural ideas in history. I grew up in the Northern part of Nigeria where the variety and quality of buildings were enough to generate much excitement and enthusiasm in anyone interested in buildings. These houses were built with stones, earth, and grass and the interesting part is that strong men with little or no architectural experience built the houses from scratch. I was always excited to sit and watch them mould red earth and make beautiful round buildings. This spiked my interest and enthusiasm in coming up with beautiful shapes, designs, and plans for the building. So, I made a decision to study a building-related course, so that I can be involved in creating these beautiful structures that I admire a lot. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) I acquired a proven high level of research skills, meticulous design techniques, and systematic idea generation and development. Capitalizing on my acquired skills, I got a work placement as a Project Advisor Office Design in a Nigerian-based Company.  While on the job, I successfully completed and received an AutoCad professional certification, the course provided intensive and comprehensive practical training, including building, editing, managing, and organising drawings; object selection and manipulation, 3D modeling, surfacing, and rendering applications for Design Centre; annotating, dimensioning and productive plotting.

My passion for design, meticulousness, creativity, and ambition drove me to delve more into architecture, interior, and spatial design. With a deep understanding of planning, an excellent ability to manage projects, and a profound sense of creativity, I believe I can enhance my academic and career pursuit by acquiring a degree in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the things that informed my choice of Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the fact that during my research, I discovered that the Architectural program offered by the school comprises six studios, which gives each student the opportunity to research, test, develop, and present design propositions from different range of materials. This will boost my sense of creativity and confidence.

After my master’s program, I plan to become a registered architectural technologist and design the modern version of the buildings that used to be in my community.

I look forward to being a student of your institution and bringing my natural creativity and innovative perspectives, alongside personal skills, and contributing to the learning process at the Massachusetts University of Technology.
