Wider Achievement Worker (Permanent) (16/68)
Base: Dumfries or Wigtown
£30,870 – £33,105
This post is for 36 hours per week. You will have responsibility for two key areas of work:
1. Wider Achievement: Lead on supporting all aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) in Dumfries and Galloway including; support to our schools and community based DofE providers, capacity building support to the regional Awards Association, lead role in implementing the 5-year DofE Strategy for Dumfries and Galloway and associated action plans, and the co-ordination of opportunities to expand the reach of the DofE to a greater population of young people aged 14-25 throughout the region. This role is about supporting the development of the award- not delivering outdoor expeditions
In addition, the Wider Achievement Worker will also have responsibility for supporting and enhancing the delivery of a number of accredited and non-accredited Youth Awards including Dynamic Youth, Hi5 and Youth Achievement Awards, Saltire, John Muir and Heritage Hero. The post holder will become the services lead expert in Wider Achievement to support our locality Youth Workers and Third Sector Youth Work partners.
2. Youth Participation and Democracy: Lead on the implementation of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Participation and Engagement Strategy inc. support to the Regional Youth Council, Scottish Youth Parliament and Champions Board. The post holder will have a responsibility to support young people to have their voices heard in decision making at a local, regional and national level and will have a key role in supporting young people, practitioners and volunteers to understand, recognise and champion Children’s Rights as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The post holder will also have responsibility for the recruitment, training and support to Adult Volunteers through the Youth Work Service.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone motivated and interested in the development of opportunities for young people throughout Dumfries and Galloway. Applicants must have significant experience in youth work, and be comfortable working within community settings with our most vulnerable young people.
This challenging and stimulating post is part of a wider team of workers developing and supporting creative youth work activity and involvement across Dumfries and Galloway.
The post will require working a minimum of 3 evenings per week and weekend work on a regular basis (at least twice per month), for which payment is included in the salary offered.
The post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.
