Job Description

  • Current RPN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Where RPN College certification diploma program did not include Advanced Physical Assessment and Medication Administration, applicant must provide evidence of additional education/certification equivalent to current diploma requirements or three (3) years current nursing experience in a psychiatric environment working with seriously mentally ill individual in an inpatient or outpatient setting including medication administration
  • Certificate/Diploma in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent or intent to enroll in program and complete within two years of hire
  • Non Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate or CPI training
  • Current BCLS, on hire
  • Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job, as per current Physical Demands Analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years current nursing experience in psychiatric environment working with seriously mentally ill individuals in an inpatient or outpatient setting including medication administration
  • Excellent and comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment skills
  • Experience in Crisis Intervention techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacologic treatment and protocols
  • RAI
  • Excellent listening, communication, interpersonal and team building skills
  • Knowledge of community resources and referral protocols for consumers and family members an asset
  • Skilled at verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques
  • Current knowledge of IPAC Standards
  • Experience in health teaching
  • Basic computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and cooperatively with all levels of staff, patients and the public
  • Demonstrated problem solving, communication, team work and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated skill in safe/correct techniques for transferring and positioning patients
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced environment with continually changing priorities
  • Ability to maximize utilization of resources
  • Demonstrated good attendance with the ability to maintain this standard
  • Ability to work within the Multidisciplinary Team
  • Trained in EPIC – training can be provided, but must pass required testing.

Hours of Work
Must be available to work 8 hour day/evening shifts and/or 12 hour day/night shifts, Monday to Sunday. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
