  • 1955: Richard Carr-Gomm, out of concern for the elderly for their need for companionship and care, used the first part of his Army gratuity to buy a house 1955, located in Bermondsey, East London. This he converted to his first charity house for elderly people, then known as the Abbeyfield Society.
  • 1956: Richard used the rest of his gratitude money to purchase another house. Thereafter, he began receiving donations from‌ the public as the good tidings of his work began to spread acrose London. With these donations, he bought more houses and officially opened The Abbeyfield Society in 1956.
  • 1963: By early 1963, The Abbeyfield Society had over 100 homes in eight London boroughs and 15 other cities throughout the country.

Over the years, The Abbeyfield Society has grown so wide with over 400 houses in seven countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Jersey, South Africa, and New Zealand, providing a supportive community to over 7,500 residents. From Richard’s kindness, generosity, and goodwill, he has helped to change the lives of thousands of people.”
